Evaluation Design Principles

As mentioned before, the amount of ground work and research we did in the initial stages of this module made it very easy to make informed decisions and didn't requite much trial and error, pretty much everything that i tried and visualised in my head came to fruition and worked well, wether this was luck im not sure but it really cut down my development stage and development and realisation became one. The main issues came in the printing stage. As i was in a rush the day of printing, i neglected to check my prints before i left and cut one incorrectly. As my print slot was on a saturday , i didn't really have time to rectify this until the drop in session on monday meaning it wasnt possible to rectify the       mistakes and meant i had to make do and bind the book as it was.  This was incredibly frustrating because of the time that goes in to designing the book and making sure everything is perfect and in the end having to settle for an imperfect version despite the hard work. The phrase   measure twice cut ones comes to mind at this time as if id just taken five minutes to look over my prints and the page i was cutting i would have been able to have the book printed as i wanted. However these things happen and ill learn from my mistake and be more careful and thorough in the future. Despite this, had the book been printed perfectly i think i would have looked really nice. I think would have achieved the aim that i set out at the beginning of this brief to create a stylish yet informative book so on that note im pretty pleased with what ive done. Overall i rwally enjoyed this brief, wether it was because of my love of harry Potter or i enjoyed making a publication, i dont know but  found the whole process really enjoyable (set backs aside)

I decided to take a chance and re print the incorrect pages however because i was still in such  a rush, mistakes were made, in the end i just didnt have enough time to get the book finished how i wanted. Although now all the pages are printed correctly so it gives a more authentic idea of how it was supposed to look.

For the second publication, after seeing the finished publication i think it was successful and i achieved what i set out to achieve. But i think if i was to do this publication again i would screen print it to give it a bit more character and to make more than one, I think that would be really effective. If i had the choice to remove the mistakes i wouldn't, i like the publication a lot more with the mistakes, as subtle as they are.

Overall i think this was fairly successful module however i felt like i didn't have much to write as the ideas just happened and worked, however annoying the problems were, im glad they happened as i was able to learn from them.

Design Principles - Studio Brief 2

The brief tells us to create a book thats content is of personal interest to us, as ive just started re-reading harry potter, i feel like this may be the way to go for me. When reading the first one it’s evident how some things come as a shock to first years so i started playing with the idea of a guide for first year students.

My aims for this brief are to create a book that conveys information whilst retaining a style that is reminiscent of the Harry Potter films.

Having completed the study tasks most of my research concerning production methods has already been done and making a decision on these will be easy once the content has been created. As for the content im taking inspiration from the graphic art of the harry potter films. I really love the quirky yet modern style of the graphics used within the films so im going to try and figure out my own way of combining these two elements.

Due to the amount of ground work done in the early stages of this module, i found it very easy to visualise what it was that i wanted and how it was going to look, this meant there wasn't

much trial and error it was a case of trying something and it worked and looked how i wanted it to look. In the design process there were very few problems which means there is not much difference between my development and realisation stage. The last things i had to do was just consider how the book was going to come together and if there were any elements i wanted to add in. I decided for thr front cover i wanted to emboss the word “hogwarts” in to it, to represent how the castle is a vast building and community but goes completely un noticed and it adds a sort of “magical” element to the book. Purely for
aesthetic purposes i wanted to place
a translucent page to separate the front cover and body of the book.

Design Principles - Studio Brief 1

“You will then need to design and produce a small publication (booklet, leaflet, etc.) that collates material which, in turn, can communicate key design principles to a reader.”

My aim is to create a small informative guide on colour that is unique/ personal to me.

Inspiration for the style of the book comes from what i think is a new style of tattooing called “ignorant style” where they disregard typical design rules. This leads to hand drawn looking tattoos that aren't always balanced or centred. i really like this style as its a lot more personal and unique. Specifically ive been looking at the work of “Sean from Texas” His style makes me think that he has summed up the clients vision in hos own way and unapologetically placed it on their skin and I really love it .

a couple of mistakes were made but in the end i think it added to the effect of the book and i really like the finished product. I left the bind on show to demonstrate the hand made feel of it.

After seeing the finished publication i think it was successful and i achieved what i set out to achieve. But i think if i was to do this publication again i would screen print it to give it a bit more character and to make more than one, I think that would be really effective. If i had the choice to remove the mistakes i wouldn't, i like the publication a lot more with the mistakes, as subtle as they are.

Deign Principles - Study Task 8

Typesetting is something i have researched thoroughly throughout Simon's tasks so i already feel quite versed in knowing what is appropriate and what is not in the context of publications.

For part one of this task I used a grid to set the type:

This is a very typical way of setting type and conforms to most design rules

For the second part of the text I disregarded most of the rules and set the type in a more expressive way, using this method i would be able to emphasise different parts of text and make it more dynamic and interesting.
